Speak Confidently

An essential life skill

Communicating ideas in front of groups is an essential life skill. Yet for many people it has become an anxious experience from a young age. They get up to speak without the skills and confidence to do this successfully and this experience can resonate through their lives.

Presentations, when well-prepared can increase a student’s confidence and communication skills in a variety of academic and social settings.

Very few people are born with the ability to speak with confidence in front of others. The good news is that the ability to speak confidently can be taught. Our Speak Confidently Student Programme has been designed to develop the speaking skills and confidence of all senior students.
Our programme is supportive and interactive, we aim to improve students ability to write an engaging speech, use storytelling to illustrate their ideas, add impact to their speaking through the use of body language and vocal variety, and speak effectively off-the-cuff.

The programme is also designed to help students manage any anxiety they have about speaking in public. They will learn strategies to rehearse and mentally prepare for giving speeches, to calm themselves and to feel more connected with their audience.
During the programme, all students have the opportunity to prepare and deliver speeches and learn to provide feedback to others on their presentations.

Our typical programme runs over a number of weeks to give students the opportunity to prepare and practice. However, we can tailor this to meet students and schools needs.

“If you can’t communicate and talk to people and get across your ideas, you’re giving up your potential”

What students at Macleans College have said

Students found the course very useful and worthwhile. They mentioned their confidence levels improving and they felt much more at ease speaking in front of their peers after the course. Many students were very nervous before the course but they were soon put at ease and involved themselves fully in the exercises. We would recommend the course for any senior students.

Andrew Mackenzie – Deputy Principal Macleans College

In such a short amount of time I already feel a lot more confident writing and presenting. The programme has helped me consider the way an audience views a speaker and made me think about how I project my voice.
